The deep-sea internet: mapping the cables that carry your data
Over 95% of intercontinental data still travels through cables you've never heard of, laid on the ocean floor. A single cable can carry hundreds of terabits per second, and a handful of specialized ships are responsible for laying and repairing all of them.
The next time a video call lags, the actual bottleneck is more likely a fishing trawler dragging an anchor across a cable route than anything happening in the cloud.
